“Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.” Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, spoke these famous words at the conclusion of his speech at Stanford University’s 2005 graduation.

Another way of saying it would be, “The key to initiative is staying hungry; the key to success is maintaining your original aspirations.”

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters … Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.” (Isa 55:1-2)

Our prayer is that, together with you, we can maintain a caring heart, stretch ourselves a little bit more and give our humble gifts of true love to the suffering families in this world — to the orphan and to the widow!

Alex and Ruth’s family of four have been serving in Water City for 12 years. They can speak the local language fluently. The following is their family letter:

Culture Evangelism:

We are the only Christian-background education center in our community. We are small but have some influence here. We provide the families and children we serve the chance to know about and gain a positive impression of Christianity.

How We Came to Open Our Training Center

In our community, there are a lot of young people who rove around with nothing to do. We tried using musical training and various other activities to bring them together; but we soon found that most of these young people would leave — some because their families found them work, some moved away; and some had come at first merely out of curiosity, and after the novelty wore off they would leave. From this experience we learned that if you really want to influence someone, you have to be with them for an extended period in a stable situation; or else you will hardly be able to influence them at all. In our community, we have young adults as well as children and teenagers. In Water City, most families have two to four children, and many are too poor to pay for their children to attend school. So we finally decided to begin an education ministry in the slum.

New Hope Education Center

Our school’s mornings are mainly occupied with our kindergarten classes, and we have classes from beginners through pre-first-grade level. Classes run from Sunday through Thursday mornings (in Muslim countries, Fridays and Saturdays are days off). In the afternoons we hold remedial classes for students attending other schools who need extra help. These remedial students range from 1st to 5th grades, and every week we also have computer classes for higher level students.

School Attendance:

At present our school has about eighty students ranging from 4 to 12 years old.

Student Background:

Almost all of our students are from Muslim families, with a few Hindus. Our district has no Christians, so as far as the Gospel is concerned it is “virgin territory.” Most of the children are from poor families.

Our Goal:

Our goal is to serve with love. Faith is not religion but is love in action. When we can’t talk about our faith directly, we serve people to show our faith. This is why our teachers often go to the students’ homes to visit their families.

Our ultimate mission is to use the ministry platforms of school and training to be able to truly bring lost lambs into the Lord’s loving care.

From Darkness Into Light — Nexus Center — The Day Is Dawning!

Lina and Malak are sisters belonging to a family of six who live in a tent next to Nexus Center. The two of them grew up in a traditional Muslim home. Their father, a devout Muslim, had naturally forbidden them to come to the Center. They had no way to go to school, and they both felt their days were empty and hopeless.

But four years ago there was a turning point. They finally obtained their father’s permission to come to the Center and begin studying. At that time, they were 14 and 15 years old but reading only at a first- or second-grade level. Although they were far behind the other students in reading ability, they were very diligent. Every day they would come to school all morning and in the afternoon would join in discipleship training sessions; and also they would often stay late at the Center. The changes that happened in their lives included not only increased knowledge, but positive influence and change in the whole family.

Their father’s response this time, due to changes in the lives of his two daughters, was very different from before. He asked them what had happened to them. The two of them then bravely confessed to him that because they had come to know Jesus and Nexus Center had treated them just like family, they had not only gained in knowledge, but the light of Jesus had enlightened their entire lives.

They were surprised that their father seemed moved — he just sighed  — His former attitude of opposition had softened! He agreed to let their mother participate in Sunday worship at the Center. She was very happy, and they’ve been joining us now for worship meetings three Sundays in a row.

This is a testimony of the power of love and acceptance! Historically, Arabs (such as Lina and Malak’s family) and the people of Tree City (including Nexus Center’s coworkers) hate each other. This is the power of our Heavenly Father to change people — He doesn’t just change people’s thinking — He also changes hearts!

Altogether, Water City’s New Hope Education Center and Tree City’s Nexus Center help more than 200 children.
