The Sorrow of Afghanistan’s Refugees

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This is a challenging time, economically, for the entire world; and every one of us is intent on providing for our daily needs. However, in times like this we need even more to support and encourage one another! From its inception, Nexus Mission has been doing our best to support orphans and widows in Afghanistan, Syria, and Myanmar. These are some of the most helpless people, in need of our caring concern, of all the people in the world!

From the bottom of our hearts, we know that every donation, large or small, represents the high value you place on human life and is also evidence of your love and your promise. Every penny you give is used where it is needed most to help homeless, cold, hungry women and children. We believe that even the smallest donation given under God’s blessing will bring forth a powerful result.

The famous ‘911’ terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York on September 11, 2001, killed about three thousand people. Almost twenty years later, on August 31, 2021, the US military and NATO forces finally officially withdrew from Afghanistan. Who knows how many precious lives were lost during that long war?

Afghani refugees in Friendship Country face monumental challenges:

Friendship Country is forcibly repatriating Afghani refugees — they now view illegal Afghanis within their borders as “conducting” a kind of oppression against their country. And now, thousands upon thousands of Afghanis, even those who have been residing in Friendship Country for decades, are being compelled to return to Afghanistan. However, goods and materials in Afghanistan are in short supply. Furthermore, crime, smuggling, illegal drugs are everywhere in Afghanistan. Educational and medical facilities are scarce … and there are still other severe problems!

Abdullah is one of these Afghani refugees. Even though he possesses a card issued by the Friendship Country government identifying him as an Afghani citizen, he is still being forced to leave. He has a mud brick house in Punjab Province. He hired a truck to take his 22-member household out of Friendship Country. As they were leaving, his neighbors and friends gathered and wept.

More than half (52%) of the registered refugees in Friendship Country are children. This includes children 4 years old and under.

Refugee life is difficult, especially for children! It’s abundantly clear that humanitarian aid and support for them is an urgent need.

In September, 2021, Nexus began receiving and assisting refugees from Afghanistan fleeing to Friendship Country.

The situation in the Middle East has already become very grave, and some places in Olive City have become targets of Israeli bombs. Some have fallen not far from the House of Hope. But despite the mortal danger, neither Ava, the Nexus coworker responsible for The House of Hope, nor her team members have stopped serving. On the contrary, they have chosen to “embrace brokenness” and to become witnesses of “the grace that overcomes sorrow.”

Today I want to express my thanks to all the brothers and sisters who are supporting work in Levant. Your support isn’t just something that we appreciate; it is a beacon of hope, a lighthouse for us on our difficult journey. And together with you, we have already helped to bring positive change to many lives.

Last week I visited a widow in dire need of help — she was sleeping on the street without even a mattress or a blanket, eating very little day by day. From the goods in the shipping container we brought her a sleeping bag, a blanket, and other things so she could be comfortable and warm. And the House of Hope didn’t just focus on physical needs; we also shared the story of Jesus’ love with her. Our hope was that she would feel she was not alone — that Christians all over the world are like a big family, praying for her. Jesus changes broken lives with love and mercy! And this widow has begun a new life under His leadership.

Grace that Overcomes Sorrow: Hanaa is a 31-year-old woman from Olive City’s capital. After she first married, her life became unbearable. She was subjected to continual abuse and humiliation for seven years in a truly heartbreaking situation.

After separating from her husband, Hanaa returned to the capital, where she happened to meet a man 25 years older than she. She married again as a kind of escape. Finally, she came to know about the House of Hope. The team began helping her every day, studying the Bible and the teachings of Christ with her. She says that meeting Christ changed her life: she has found peace, love, joy, and fulfillment.

In war zones, many people are drowning in their sorrows! But in the midst of all the chaos, the Nexus team is determined to be a conduit of salvation — of God’s grace that embraces brokenness and overcomes the sorrow. May we continue supporting these suffering ones in prayer so that more souls lost in chaos receive light, grace, and mercy!
