Faith from the Water City Slum

Faith is only six months old, and his mother is just 18. We gave him the name “Faith” because our hope is that in the future He will believe that Jesus is the True God. As soon as we spoke his name, “Faith,” to him, he laughed aloud.

At the time of his birth he was found to have proctatresia (no anus hole, cannot pass waste). For a child with such a serious condition who comes into the world in a tiny, dark, humid, hot slum dwelling where sewage overflows all around, it’s hard to imagine how he could possibly survive. And what made matters worse was that his father immediately abandoned them, and the mother still doesn’t know where he is. The only thing she could do was go back and live with her parents, but for all of them even to get enough to eat is very difficult, as the only one in the family who can find work is the grandfather…how much less could they ever hope to afford medical treatment!

‘Little Hope’ was brought with his parents and little sister when they fled Olive City to the refugee camp in Tree City. His palms and the soles of his feet had become thick, cracked, scaly, and very painful…even his ability to walk normally and do other normal daily things had become a problem. A worker shared his situation with us, and when Brother Wong, a dentist from Hong Kong, heard about it, together with a mission team he brought ointment for Little Hope; and in ten short days his skin was almost completely healed up. Seeing the grateful amazement of the whole family, we couldn’t help giving praise to God. But after another week Little Hope’s skin condition recurred; and though it’s much better that it was at first, it still needs treatment.

Little Hope and her sister both studied at the Center, and it was the Center that has walked with them and their family through their experience as war refugees. Last year Little Hope’s father was diagnosed with a tumor. To someone already suffering as a refugee, this was one disaster on top of another; but thankfully, when brothers and sisters prayed, the originally malignant tumor turned benign. Little Hope’s father subsequently had a successful operation and has recovered completely. This family has experienced God’s power through so many details of their recent life!

Little Hope’s grandmother has come to the Center for help. She has an ulcerated wound on her arm that is so deep that, if not treated and healed promptly, could cause septicemia or even the loss of her arm, or lead to another life-threatening condition.

Brother Tai has been ministering in Banana City of Southeast Asia for nearly ten years. Persecution is severe here, everyone is in danger, and people naturally distrust one another… so imagine how difficult it is to train disciples and coworkers!

But despite the great obstacles, God brought together people with the same heart to work with Brother Tai. For a long time he had four strong coworkers who worked faithfully with him, shouldering loads of used clothing, hiking for eight or nine hours at time, climbing mountains and fording rivers, going everywhere visiting the people, distributing clothing, casting out demons, healing the sick, and preaching repentance.

But in the last year or so they’ve had some serious misfortunes. One of the coworkers died in a car accident, another has left his hometown to avoid the persecution, and Brother Stone has fluid on the liver–and so his life is in danger.

Because of these four stories, funds have been raised and projects done to help with medical costs. Our workers are ministering in the field with a love for lost souls burning day by day in their hearts. As we face the poverty, the difficulty, and the suffering caused by sickness in these people’s lives, besides pray-ing together for them, we want to invite everyone to join us! Let’s connect with these field ministries, with practical love and action that provides funding for medical needs in order to bring hope to those who have lost hope!

For these slum orphans and widows, for these displaced and homeless war refugees, for the poor and the oppressed, and for the few local ‘fellow soldiers’ we have in various fields… for all these, let us not forget the heart we had for them in the beginning; let’s light a Lamp of Hope for them!

We would like especially to invite those brothers and sisters in the medical profession to come together to create a medical support team, in this way to come alongside our overseas field workers and their families, as well as those needy people they are striving with all their heart and soul to serve, by providing medical advice and guidance for field projects and plans. This will help to make their journeys and their ventures healthier and safer!
